We are deeply saddened to learn that our former forward Gary Moore has passed away at the age of 76.

Gary played 181 times and scored 55 times in a Blues jersey between November 1968 and March 1974. This feat still made him 18th in the history of SUFC’s top scorer list, but after a long illness Died on Wednesday.

Gary was born in Sedgefield, County Durham, and was a member of the iconic Southend “Best Moore-Ghana” striker. He intimidated the defense of the fourth and third regions in the late 1960s/early 1970s. For all those who were fortunate enough to see this strike force in action, there may not be a better combination of scoring machines in the history of the club.

Some people will remember that Gary scored two games for us in that 68/69 Cup, when he and Billy Best played against Kings Lynn and Brentwood. Gary scored that season. 21 balls have been scored.

Gary signed from Grimsby, his opponent on Friday night, and started his apprenticeship in Sunderland, during which time he was an England youth team international.

After a brief loan with Colchester (where he was affectionately referred to as “the best loan contract ever”), Gary continued to play for Chester and Swansea, before retiring in 1978 due to injury.

After hanging up his boots, Gary opened a sporting goods store on Hamlet Court Road and also did some scouts for Peter Taylor (who told us that Gary died today).

Gary often keeps in touch with SUEPA (Southend United Former Players Association) at his home in Sunderland, and always calls an old fan friend of his after receiving their newsletter.
