The popular actor Sidney Poitier has sadly passed away. Bahamian Minister of Foreign Affairs Fred Mitchell shared the devastating news of his death. It was stated that the actor died on Thursday, January 6, 2022. Sidney was 94-year-old at the time of sudden demise. Bahamas deputy prime minister Chester Cooper expressed his sadness on the actor’s demise and wrote that they have lost an icon, a mentor, a hero and a national treasure. Ever since the news came to light, Sidney’s fans and well-wishers have been paying him sincere tributes on social media.
Jeffrey Wright, the American actor, took to Twitter and shared a heartfelt post there. He wrote that Sidney Poitier was a landmark actor and was one of a kind. Other celebrities also paid the late actor a tribute. Hollywood figure Oprah Winfrey shared a photo of herself with the actor and wrote that Sidney had an enormous soul that she will forever cherish and that he will be truly missed by everyone.

Denzel Washington also remembered Sidney. He said that it was a privilege to call the actor his friend and called Sidney a gentleman who opened doors for everyone that had been closed for years. Talking about Sidney Poitier, he was born on February 20, 1927, in Miami. The actor only had one year of schooling and he struggled against illiteracy, prejudice and poverty for a long time.
However, his struggles paid off as Sidney went ahead to become one of the first black actors to be accepted in lead roles by mainstream audiences. He broke all the racial barriers and managed to become the first black winner of the best actor Oscar for his exceptional performance in Lillies of the Field in 1963. The Bahamian-American actor appeared in plenty of movies including In the Heat of the Night which had two sequels titled They Call Me Mister Tibbs, released in 1970, and The Organization in 1971.
Some other classic films of Sidney are A Patch of Blue which was appreciated by many. From 1997 to 2007, Sidney was also the Bahamian Ambassador to Japan. Apart from winning the Best Actor Oscar, the actor also received ten Golden Globes nominations along with two Academy Awards, six BAFTA Awards and a Screen Actors Guild Award (SAG). Sidney Poitier is survived by six children, and three great-grandchildren. We pay homage to his soul!
