Meet Karishma Vaswani, John Cleese’s ‘cancel culture’ interviewer?

As it is reported, Actor John Cleese intends to complain following a BBC interview covering cancel culture.

As the BBC World News TV interview makes headlines, the public are keen to know more about the journalist who led the talk.

So, who is journalist Karishma Vaswani and why is John Cleese dissatisfied with the interview?

John Cleese set to complain over interview

Comedian and actor John Cleese said that he was doing an interview with the BBC to discuss his stand-up shows in Singapore and Bangkok, but the topic had instead turned to ‘cancel culture’.

Cleese went on to say that journalist Karishma Vaswani was attempting to portray him in an “old-fashioned” way, tweeting: “She then asked a disjointed question, clearly trying to portray me as old-fashioned, uncaring and basically harmful.”

The 82-year-old then went on to say: “Karishma had no interest in a discussion with me. She wanted only the role of prosecutor. The BBC needs to train her again.”

Who is Karishma Vaswani?

Karishma Vaswani, who led the John Cleese interview, is a journalist who first joined the BBC in 2003.

Most recently, Vaswani has served as the Indonesia Editor for the BBC World Service in Jakarta, but previously the held position of of the BBC’s Indonesia correspondent from 2009 to 2014.

As per her BBC biography, Karishma also was the first presenter of India Business Report, “BBC World News’ business programme dedicated to examining the issues of trade, business and economics in India.”

Prior to her role at the BBC, Karishma worked at CNBC Asia between 1999 and 2003.

According to her LinkedIn, Vaswani is a 1998 graduate from the University of Warwick where she earned a BA in English Literature.

The journalist also boasts an international baccalaureate from Jakarta International School.

In terms of her personal life, Karishma Vaswani is a mother of two.

BBC issues statement following John Cleese interview

In the aftermath of Cleese’s interview, a spokesperson for the BBC come forward.

The spokesperson explained: “This was a fair and appropriate interview which touched on topics that John Cleese has previously been vocal about as well as themes within his new tour.

“Our presenter is an excellent and experienced journalist who conducted the interview entirely within our editorial guidelines.”
