Wanda Young’s daughter Meta Ventress has shared the disheartening news. While sharing the news to The New York Times this Saturday, December 25, 2021, Ventress said that the singer was suffering from Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a lung disease that causes difficulty in breathing by blocking airflow, and was facing health complications as well. She further added that she died two weeks ago in Garden City, MI.

Who Was Wanda Young?

Ever since she confirmed the death of the renowned singer, tributes are being paid to her on the internet. Netizens and other celebrities are remembering her while condoling her unfortunate demise. The American singer Wanda Young was also known as Wanda Rogers while her real name was Wanda LaFaye Young. She was mainly known for being the lead singer of the Motown female group titled “The Marvelettes”. The group also went ahead to display the wave of American female pop music groups.

Born on August 9, 1943, in Michigan, Wanda, Wanda had dreamt of becoming a nurse earlier. Her professional music career began when she was asked by her classmate from Inkster High School, Gladys Horton, to audition for the group named Marvels. Her audition went well and she went ahead to join the group. The group released “Please Mr Postman”, a song written by Dobbins. The group “Marvels” got appreciated by many and later their group’s name changed to “Marvelettes”. The aforementioned song had garnered top position and had remained on the top slot on the Billboard R&B chart for almost seven weeks. They delivered plenty of songs throughout their career.

Young debuted as the lead with the song “I’ll Keep Holding On”. Since then, she started to get known as the lead vocalist of the group. The singer was also involved with substance abuse and alcoholism for several years after she left Marvelettes. in both 2013 and 2015, the Marvelettes was nominated for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Wanda Young is survived by her three children along with seven grandchildren and a great-grandson. Besides, she has also left her four brothers and four sisters behind.
