Ryan Muncy is a saxophonist with the International Contemporary Orchestra for his “amazing virtuosity” (Chicago Tribune) and “showcasing the ductility and crazy extension of the instrument, as well as its refinement and refinement” While acclaimed (Chicago Reader) . . his work emphasizes collaborations with contemporary composers and artists and aims to reinvent the way listeners experience the saxophone through contemporary music.
Muncy received the Kranichstein Music Prize at the 46th International Summer Course in Darmstadt (Germany), the French Fulbright Fellowship, the Edes Emerging Artists Foundation Award, the Harriet Hale of the Etats-Unis Foundation in Paris Woolley Scholarship and contributed to over 250 new works for the instrument.
His debut solo album, “Hot,” was released by New Focus Recordings in 2013 to critical acclaim, hailed as “fascinating” (Alex Ross) and “one of the best albums of the year” (Time Out New York). Muncy’s second solo album “ism” was released by TUNDRA/New Focus Recordings in 2016 and was recognized by the Chicago Tribune for its “technical prowess”.
He has been a soloist at international music festivals, including the Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center, the International Summer Program on New Music in Darmstadt and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York City) for Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Klang” at the U.S. premiere festival. The New York Times described his performance of Edenia as the highlight of the cycle — “especially memorable…the lonely wanderer in a tornado”. He regularly performs with several leading contemporary music ensembles, including the Talea Ensemble and the Wet Ink Ensemble.
