The role of Pell could be run by 2 people moving forward, as stated by sources. In the meantime, the hearsay is swirling in the Television industry that the move may be a way for Seven to keep Pell on its books and far from 9 executives who want to poach the wunderkind for the Today show.

News broke last month that Pell will resign from the role he has held for the last 11 years around Easter time.  As per the report in The Sydney Morning Herald in the month of December, the top producer was eyeing potential offers in the United States.

Pell asserted at the time his present contract with Seven was “in negotiation” and no decisions had been made.
