The suspect who ambushed and shot two NYPD officers Friday night, killing one officer and another in critical condition, was a convicted felon who was on probation at the time of the attack.

Essig told the outlet that McNeil was later arrested for assaulting a police officer in 2002. He was arrested twice in Pennsylvania in 2003 on a felony drug charge and a misdemeanor drug charge

The alleged gunman’s last known address is Allentown, Pennsylvania, about 90 miles west of New York City, where the shooting took place.

McNeill was sitting in the back bedroom of his Harlem apartment when he opened the door and opened fire on two officers, according to police. Rookie police officer Jason Rivera, 22, was killed at the scene. His then-unidentified 27-year-old partner was seriously injured.

At 6.15pm, two police officers and a third police station were responding to a domestic disturbance call from a woman who said she needed help caring for her son. Essig told the outlet that the woman “didn’t mention injuries or weapons.”

Police seized an illegal firearm at the scene, a Glock 45 with a high-capacity magazine capable of holding 40 rounds. The weapon was determined to have been stolen from Baltimore in 2017. Police are currently working with the ATF to determine if the gun was used for other criminal activities.
