Paul Tavilla passed away on November 6, 2014 in Arlington, Massachusetts. Paul was married to his sweetheart Mary Jane for 58 years before his demise. His daughter’s husband Russell Hagopian lives in Waltham, MA with their children Brandon and Brittany. Paul was extremely happy when his grandchildren were born and they made him very proud.
Paul Tavilla was well known for holding the Guinness world record for catching the most grapes (22 in 15 seconds), which he did at the New England Produce Center in Chelsea, Massachusetts. Aside from being the brother of nine siblings, including Tina Maselli (NJ), Pauline Citro (SC), Rosalie Tavilla (FL), and Richard Tavilla (Bedford, MA), Paul was also famous for serving in the US army during the Cold War, from 1957 to 1959.
Together with his other seven brothers, Paul owned and operated the P. Tavilla Company, a wholesale produce distributor, located at the New England Produce Center in Chelsea, MA. Paul was famous for appearing on TV shows with Regis Philbin and Johnny Carson due to his Guinness world record for catching grapes.
Paul was a hardworking man who had a big heart, and loved his family very much. He enjoyed the smile that the watch brought during charity events and hospital visits with children, more than anything. Paul passed away on November 8, 2014 at the age of 53. His funeral will be held at Grace Chapel, 59 Worthen Rd, Lexington, MA on Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at 11 a.m. Friends and family are welcome to attend.
Paul loved living in Brockton, Massachusetts, and would have been heartened to know that donations can be made to Teen Challenge in his memory, at 1315 Main St., Brockton, MA 02301. His family asks that flowers not be sent, but rather condolences expressed in other ways. Paul was buried at Westview Cemetery, also in Lexington, MA.
