Yes, you are right we are talking about former Fremantle midfielder Harley Balic who had done his best to fight the bad and evil impact of anxiety and depression. On Sunday, 09th January 2022, just days after turning 25, he passed away alone in a hotel in Highett-in Melbourne’s southeast. While the death cause of Balic is not being treated as suspicious by Victorian Cops, the state coroner will not be able to assert what is broadly suspected as his cause of demise for some time.

Whatever the case, suicide was something Balic had been excitable about attempting to prevent within the general community. Last year on 16th September 2021, as Melburnians continued to suffer under their 6th hard lockdown, Nancy the mother of Balic proudly hit social media platforms to declare that her son was serving with Monash Health as a mental health worker.

Nancy uploaded a picture of the identification pass of Balic and wrote “So proud of this legend”. Balic had been extremely close to his parents-especially to his mother. He had also been very open about his own fighting and struggles with depression. As Melburnians were plunged into their first of many lockdowns in the year 2020, Balic jumped into icy waters in the hope of bringing attention to the hidden mental health crisis of the population.

What began out as a 30 days challenge stretched into 50 as the Victorian Premier Daniel Andrew’s lockdowns dragged on and on. Balic uploaded after 30 days that “Regardless of your situation you are not alone. Do things that will make whatever situation you are facing less disorderly instead of more. I am not an angel but this is something that is helped the routine and clarity.

Balic had stated that the dips in close freezing water helped clear his mind and began the day with clarity. He wrote, “I know it is not much but for what individuals go through every day and the sadness and anxieties in the life of the people it is just a small act of appreciation toward everybody out there suffering via whatever chaos there is in their life.” His last public post on Facebook was made on 5th September that year, just days after he completed his 50-day mental health challenge. After the shattering news of the demise of Balic, Collingwood AFLW co-captain Steph Chiocci shared their tribute on Twitter.
